sandy no longer a hurricane, but still packing winds. take a look at the satellite and radar picture. you can pick out the center of circulation t. is moving across central pennsylvania at this time up to our north, and it's moving off to the west. we're going to continue to get some rainfall here this morning, occasionally off and on, and our temperatures are so cold, a little snow mixing in from the west. of course, the higher elevations getting hit hard now with some snow above 2,000 feet, where blizzard warnings remain in effect. flood alerts all across the area. a flash flood watch and warnings. many rivers and streams are out of their banks, and there's so much water we received from sandy that it's going to take a long time for all that to funnel down into the bigger rivers and streams and make its way over towards the atlantic ocean and get out of here. so many of the rivers will be in flood through a good part of the week. our winds still pretty gusty at this morning. on average, about 25 to 30 miles per hour. we could still see

the death toll from sandy continues to rise. we now know that at least 41 new yorkers have perished. as i cautioned yesterday, as rescue and recovery efforts continue, there could be more fatalities that are discovered. we are getting to the point where we think we've been through every place, but you can never be 100% sure. yesterday, as i'm sure you heard, first responders recovered the bodies of little brandon and connor moore of staten island. brandon was 2 years old, and connor was 4. they were swept away from their mother's arms by the force of sandy's storm surge, and it just breaks your heart to even think about it. as a father, i cannot imagine the pain and anguish the boys' parents are suffering. their father, damien, is a city sanitation worker. at the time of the tragedy he was on the job helping our city respond to the storm. i did talk to him this morning and expressed as a parent my deepest sympathies. there's nothing you can ever say to a parent who has lost a child other than you're praying for them, you're pray

we're on sandy point road. that fire has been burning since 9:00 and looks a lot better than it has in the past few hours as it starts to burn down, the house that was standing up there now burning to the ground. the problem that we had here was that fire personnel could not get there to chalker beach. chalker beach is surrounded by water and the floods there really put the water up about three to four feet and we're actually told it's still up three to four feet so what happened was a neighbor called in the fire saying that two homes were burning over there and that neighbor actually had to be rescued because the neighbor did not heed the mandatory evacuation order that was given for chalker beach. now, again, we are told that two homes were destroyed in that fire because firefighters couldn't get there. they actually tried to take an old army tank and get to that location, but the water was so high that the vehicle had some electrical problems and had to retreat. what we do know is that these are two summer h

sandy is weakening. we are seeing an impact east coast great lakes and west virginia with blizzard conditions going on right now. several areas recorded over a foot of snow. we saw strong winds across portions of long island. wind gusts over 90 miles per hour. we are seeing these trees down power lines down such widespread impact. not just across long island but across new jersey, further inland. land fall did occur at 8:00 p.m. eastern time near the atlantic city area 5 miles to the south, southwest of that city with maximum sustained winds at that time 80 miles per hour. at that time sandy was not officially a hurricane any more it made the transition to the post tropical cyclone. you can see extensive damage. i am glad many people have taken the storm seriously and hopefully many people heeded the evacuations will be serving the damage as the sunrises later on today. we are seeing strong wind gusts 48 miles per hour across the new york city area. that wind is coming out of the southeast. we will conti

look at how destructive superstorm sandy was. this was a dock that completely demolished, that showed you how strong the wind and the waves were in this area. there was a mandatory evacuation order for this area, but clearly some residents say they wanted to ride out the storm and this homeowner stayed inside during the entire time and they say they watched the waves come up and bang into their home. they saw parts of the dock bang into their porch right here as well as a house boat basically collide, causing this trail of destruction. you can see pieces of their home on their lawn, and obviously just a trail of debris here. this is a scene a lot of residents are coming back to as they try to pick up the pieces. now if you look across the street, where the dock ended up or at least a portion of it, in somebody's driveway, you could also see an uprooted tree, downed power lines and if you look at the end of the street, that is where a houseboat ended up, and washed ashore, so clearly a very devastating scene here for a lot of resi
